The Union Bank Museum: A Brief History
by Leslie Greene  April 28, 2026

Constructed in 1841 as a fireproof structure by Benjamin Chaires and closely associated with “the Columns”, Union Bank was originally established as a “planters’ bank,” serving the agricultural financial needs of Tallahassee and the surrounding region (Museum of Florida History, 2026; Schuck, 1970). The bank ceased operations in 1843 due to unsound banking practices, the economic fallout of the Panic of 1837, and the impact of ongoing conflicts with Native American tribes (Museum of Florida History, 2026).

Following the Civil War and Emancipation, the building was repurposed between 1869 and 1879 as the National Freedman’s Savings and Trust Company. In the years that followed, it served a variety of functions, including housing state and county administrative offices (Museum of Florida History, 2026; Schuck, 1970).

In 1971, Union Bank was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It was subsequently relocated from South Adams Street to its current site on Apalachee Parkway. After an extensive restoration, the Union Bank Museum opened in 1984. The building underwent its next major restoration in 2023, led by the Florida Department of State (Museum of Florida History, 2026; Florida Division of Historical Resources, 2026).

In partnership with the Museum of Florida History and the Meek-Eaton Black Archives, new exhibits were unveiled to the public in February 2024. Today, the museum serves as an important educational resource, highlighting its historical significance and deep connections to Florida’s Black community across centuries (Museum of Florida History, 2026).

Visitors can explore the museum free of charge, engaging with exhibits that illuminate key aspects of Florida’s territorial and post-Emancipation history. The museum also offers educational programming, including Advanced Placement (AP) writing workshops and other learning opportunities for students (Museum of Florida History, 2026).
